Hello adventurer! In today’s quest, we’re going to explore the difference between UX in games and UX in more standard product design, such as for websites and mobile. Is it the same? How are they different? Can you learn Game UX if you know Product UX?

WHAT MAKES GAME UX DIFFERENT?

When people hear "UX Design," they usually think about websites, mobile apps, or other digital products. And while Game UX shares many of the same principles, the goal is fundamentally different.

In product design, success is often measured by efficiency.

  • Can users complete a task quickly?

  • Can they find what they're looking for?

  • Can they accomplish their goal with as little friction as possible?

Think about your banking app → You want to transfer money in seconds.

You don't want surprises, challenges, or complexity. Good Product UX removes obstacles and helps users get from A to B as efficiently as possible.

Game UX has a different goal

Games are designed to entertain, challenge, and create memorable experiences.

Some friction is intentional

For example, in a product, making a user wait is usually considered bad UX.
In a game, tension and anticipation can be part of the experience.
A difficult boss fight, a mysterious puzzle, figuring out what items are best to use in a situation, or a challenging level can all be a part of the intentional challenge and do not need to be explained or guided better.

This means Game UX designers constantly ask themselves:
"Is this frustrating because it's bad UX, or because this part of the game is intentionally not too clear”

  • Game Narrative

  • Audio effects

  • Character Dialog

This is what makes Game UX so fascinating and important.
It sits in the middle of design, psychology, technology, and entertainment.

Summary:
  • Product UX helps people do things as effectively as possible.

  • Game UX helps players overcome unintentional obstacles so they can focus on the intentional challenges.
