
Hello adventurer! In today’s quest, we’re going to explore what a UX designer working in games actually does in their daily work. This is a small summary of normal tasks for me (not all on the same day ofc).
DAILY WORK
🎢 Designing wireframes & flowcharts – Sketching out how players will navigate through menus, inventories, level-up screens, tutorials, and more. It's about mapping the journey before it’s built.
✏️ Create Wireframes & Mockups - make many mockups that are quick to update and to test out ideas.
👩⚖️ Design using rules and principles - to ensure a consistent design across the game.
🔍 Work with icons - shapes and symbolism communicate a lot.
👁️ Design for Accessibility - both making sure the game is designed in an accessible way from the start in the design, and giving players setting options by working with programmers.
🙋♀️ Be in meetings - Even if we don’t work on a feature yet, UX needs to be aware of design directions and priorities early.
✏️ Re-do designs and iterate - This can be that the game changed in direction, new features got added, stakeholders didn’t like the design, or other feedback showed new problems.
🖼️ Design texts - Everything from Tutorials, menus, and pop-ups needs to be read clearly.
📝 UX Writing - Writing text is a craft that is needed across the game. For example: Tutorials, menu titles, setting descriptions.
💬 Collaborating with UX/UI team – UX designers work closely with programmers, engineers, and UI artists to make sure everything works smoothly together.
👂 Listen to and read player Feedback - Collect and analyse feedback to fix player problems and make the game better.
🕵️ Researching player behaviour – Reading feedback, watching playtest recordings, or digging into data to see where players get confused or stuck so you can fix it, or delighted so you can make more of what is good.
⚠️ Decide design priorities - what is most important in the design.
📜 MVP priorities - Create MVP lists and designs from dev and player needs.
🎮 Play the game a lot - because we need to know how the game plays, what doesn’t work, and what can be better.
🎮 Play other games - to get ideas, inspiration, and references for clever solutions. (Yes, it’s ok to play games during work time)
📝 Documentation - it’s important to document designs so the team knows what has been designed and decided. It can be months between the design and implementation. Document it so that details are not forgotten.
🌱 Design Tutorials & Onboarding - for a great first experience into the game that keeps them playing, and not quitting.
🙏 Collaborate with Game & Combat Designers - to design the experience and challenges they want the player to have.
🙏 Work with UI Art and UI Engineers - to ensure the game looks and behaves as designed.

👉 Conclusion: I hope this gave you some more insight into the things a UX designer does on a daily basis, working in games.
TLDR:
A UX Designer works on many areas within design and collaborates with people across the team to make sure the game is understandable and immersive.
