Hello adventurer! In today’s quest, we’re going to explore some other ways you can learn about Game UX Design, except for this Newsletter, ofc 😉
5 STEPS TO LEARN GAME UX
1. 📚 Read Books
I love reading books, and it has been a big part of my journey, so this has to be number 1 on the list, of course.
Some books that I recommend:
Psychology of Games
Don’t Make Me Think
The Elements of User Experience
Design for How People Think
The Design of Everyday Things
2. 🎮 Play games
Investigate and Research games to see how they solve for UX. You can analyse your favourite games, the most popular ones right now (some are free), and play games you would not normally play… why? It’s a great way to experience the Onboarding and User Experience as a new player, since you are not already used to this type of game experience.
3. 👁️ Watch people play games
Watching videos of people playing games gives you a glimpse into how they see, learn, and understand the game. It’s important to pick the ones you watch… they should not be too performative, overreact, play a character, or be too distracted by their chat.
Look for someone genuine who likes to play the game and speaks out loud about their thoughts on the game.
4. ✏️ Practice Design
Practice your design skills by doing your own designs and problem-solving to practice UX for games. Do this by creating your own challenges or tasks.
For example:
Structure a Tutorial flow.
Design menus needed to make an existing single-player game into Multiplayer.
How could a game be more Accessible?
5. ⚔️ Take my Course on Game UX in Design
